Q: Where can I walk in Greater Kalamazoo?

A:There are many places in the area where anyone can walk,please see THIS LIST, malls and public school buildings that have opened their doors for members of the community to walk on specified days and times.

Q: How can I learn about fitness events and races in my community?

A: Two excellent resources can be found on THIS SITE, and THIS ONE will tell you more about groups in the area with a focus on fitness activities.

Q: How do I walk safely when there are no sidewalks or in the dark?

A: Here are a few ideas that will result in much safer walking, jogging, or running:

  • Walk against the traffic, on the left side, when walking on the shoulder of the road.
  • Walk on less traveled roads.
  • Wear bright clothing during the day.
  • Avoid listening to loud music so that you can hear traffic and dogs.
  • At cross roads make eye contact with drivers to ensure that they have seen you.
  • If there is no designated cross walk, avoid crossing where you can not see oncoming traffic, for example, at the crest of a hill.
  • At night wear white or reflective clothing.
  • As much as possible use sidewalks and off road paths.
  • Carry a flashlight to help you to avoid tripping.
  • Most importantly walk in groups.
